“19th Amendment, a historic victory” – President

President Maithripala Sirisena says the adoption of the 19th amendment to the constitution with a two third majority in parliament, is a historic victory for the Sri Lankan people.

Issuing a statement the Presidential Media Division said that President Sirisena thanks all stakeholders who contributed to this effort. President Maithripala Sirisena says that this victory is the result of a 37 year long struggle undertaken by the active citizens of Sri Lanka, adding that it is his belief that this victory is relevant not only for today but for future generations as well.

President Sirisena thanks all stakeholders who contributed to this effort, including the Maha Sanga, religious leaders, political parties and civil society groups, active citizens, who struggled, sustained and enriched the discourse on this amendment.

The President specially thanked the Members of Parliament and political parties who supported this amendment.

The statement reads further that though Presidential candidates had promised to abolish the Executive Presidency at five previous Presidential Elections, this is the only time it could be made a reality.

In his statement President Maithripala Sirisena goes on to say that this is a major step taken to strengthen the democracy of the country, as it was achieved constitutionally in compliance with the determination of the Supreme Court and also with the consent of all political parties.
