Opposition Leader of the Sri Jayawardenepura – Kotte Municipal Council, Sugath Appuhamy, alleges that plans are afoot to demolish the council building.
The building housing the Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte Municipal Council, was built in 1930 and has immense historical value.
While a proposal on the demolition of the building has been tabled in the council, it has been adopted. Although the opposition voted against the proposal, all ruling party members had supported it.
It was revealed at this media briefing that plans have been made to construct the new municipal council building on a plot of land in the Welikada area.
Sugath Appuhamy noted that a sum of Rs.12 million has so far been paid for consultancy charges for the new council building.
We made inquiries from the Mayor of Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, regarding the allegations levelled by the opposition. Mayor of Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte Janaka Ranawaka said that these accusations are blatant lies. Speaking further he said:
I will definitely take legal action against this. Municipal councils cannot sell off lands. Not even a single provincial council can sell off their lands. A proposal has been approved to initiate a project on land owned by the Kotte Municipal council. We plan to conduct it, with the Urban Development Authority. We cannot do what we want with it. No land is being sold as per those allegations.
