The final rites for the late Nimal Mendis, a musician and composer who revolutionised the industry in Sri Lanka, were observed on Saturday, April 18 .
A pioneer in the fusion of western music styles with traditional rhythms, Nimal Mendis changed the face of local film soundtracks.
A highly-awarded musician, Nimal Mendis composed music and lyrics for several Sinhala and English language songs.
He was 84 years old at the time of his passing.
President Maithripala Sirisena too, visited the private funeral parlour in Colombo, where Nimal Mendis’ remains lay, in order to pay his final respects.
The final rites were observed at the Jawatte Public Cemetery amid a large gathering including prominent politicians and artistes.
