The JVP noted to the media on Friday that the resignation of Somawansa Amarasinghe was done unknown to the party. The JVP went on to state that the party was only made aware of his decision after it was reported in the media and that they do not agree with his decision.

They added that the JVP politburo had held discussions to prevent this move by Amarasinghe.

Amarasinghe had stated to the media that he disagrees with JVP policies and that they are unsuitable for the modern times. He went on to add that he is willing to form a new party more suitable for the times. Somawansa Amarasinghe, took on the leadership of the revolutionary-minded party, after its former leader Rohana Wijeweera.

Former JVP Politburo Member, Nandana Gunathilake added the recent trend of resigning leaders in JVP was due to unresolved issues within the party that has led to an ideological struggle and the party was headed down the wrong path.
Piyasiri Wijenayake, Politburo Member of the National Freedom Front stated that the resigning of Somawansa Amarasinghe is a sad occasion for the party. He went on to add that the reason behind resignations in the recent past is due to the JVP being steered by international intelligence agencies and as a result, the policy of the JVP has been forgotten which has led to the drum up of support for the UNP.
