The Office of the Police Media Spokesperson says that two persons were killed in a re-ignited conflict between two villages in Padiyathalawa. It was reported that there had been tensions between the villagers of Kadupahara and Kehelulla in the Padiyathalawa Police Division.
Six persons had arrived in a lorry from the village of Kadupahara village at around 10.30 on Monday night and had consumed alcohol which later resulted in an escalated verbal argument.
An eyewitness stated that the group of persons who ran through the forest injured three individuals from Kehelulla village and had fled the area in a lorry. Further, he stated that he witnessed the lorry travelling in full speed when he was in the garden. After the lorry had knocked down one of the individuals, he was admitted to the Mahiyangana Hospital at the same time. Thereafter, there was a loud noise, after which it was discovered that a person was knocked to the ground.
The victims were brothers from the same family. One of the victims, aged 28, was a father of one.
Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara noted that this altercation took place at around 10.30 on the night of Monday, April 13. Police stated:
After the fight one person purposely knocked down three persons in his lorry. This is still considered a homicide. We arrested the driver on charges of manslaughter. We are attempting to arrest another suspect in relation to this incident.
The driver who was arrested in connection to the incident was presented before the Dehiaththakandiya Magistrate. He was remanded until April 28.
