The mortal remains of the Chief Prelate of the Asgiri Chapter of the Siam Sect Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkhitha Thero were brought to the Asgiri Viharaya in Kandy on Thursday, April 9.
The mortal remains of the late Chief Prelate which were brought to the country from Singapore the previous night, were placed at a private funeral parlour in Colombo before being taken to Kandy on Thursday morning.
The cortege departed from Borella via Peliyagoda, along the Kandy road and reached the Kiribathgoda town by 7 a.m. The devotees who were mourning the demise of the Chief Prelate gathered on either side of the road to pay their respects.
The procession then reached the Kegalle Town passing Kadawatha, Nittambuwa and Warakapola via Pasyala.
Devotees including the Chief Minister of the Sabaragamuwa Province lined the streets to pay their respects to the late Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkhitha Thero as the cortege went on to pass Mawanella and Pilimathalawa, reaching the Kandy town by 11 a.m.
The final rites will be observed on Sunday April 12.
