Nine lives lost in 24 hours – tragic accidents in Mahinyanganaya, Marawila, Mundalama

Nine people including an eight-month-old  have been killed and 21 others injured, in road accidents that occurred over the past 24 hours.

One of the accidents involving a lorry and a three wheeler occurred in the Kurichchankulama area in Mundalama on the Colombo – Puttalam main road. Our reporter says the three-wheeler was carrying a family that was returning home after dropping off a family member at the Katunayake Airport.

Five people including two small children were travelling in the three-wheeler at the time of the collision which claimed the life of the the three-wheeler driver, a woman and an eight month old. Our reporter say that the deceased infant’s twin brother and their mother have been hospitalised.

A hospital spokesperson said the infant’s condition is critical.

The father was traveling abroad for employment.

In another accident on April 5, a three-wheeler collided with a bus in Marawila on the Colombo – Chilaw main road.

Two young men travelling in the three wheeler were killed in the accident, while two others have been hospitalised with injuries. Our reporter says the victims are residents of Thoduwawa in Mahawewa.

Meanwhile, another accident occurred on  April 5 near the 10th mile post in Hebarawa, Mahiyanganaya, when a pick-up truck belonging to the Chairman of the Wilgamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha, veered off the road.

A nineteen-year-old boy was killed in the accident while three people including the Chairman have been hospitalised.

Our reporter says the pick up truck had collided with a nearby electricity post.

In yet another accident which occurred on the dawn  of April 6, ten children were injured when a school bus collided with a pick up truck near the 8th mile post in Thalangama, early Monday morning.

The school bus was carrying a group of students on a field trip from Panadura to Colombo. The driver of the pick-up truck who sustained serious injuries was admitted to the National Hospital in Colombo and the driver of the bus has been placed under arrest.
