Party Leaders have agreed to take up the draft 19th Amendment to the Constitution for debate in Parliament on  April 8.

Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe noted that the bill would be debated on for three days from April 8  – 10.

The Minister of Justice stated that even though the opposition leader voiced his agreement, there are some in the opposition who say the amendment should be accompanied by electoral reforms.

However, the Minister added that, following several rounds of talks, they have come to an understanding that even if electoral reforms are introduced, since it will take a long time, the 19th Amendment will be adopted for the time-being; and to consider the upcoming election as the final election to be held under the preferential voting system and to introduce a more suitable electoral system in the future.
