A tense situation broke out between a group of police officers and locals in the Udyanapura area in Narahenpita as the police officers attempted to raid an illicit liquor brewery in the area.
The locals in the area charged that the police officers had begun attacking them, making false allegations.
A resident who was a victim of the brawl stated that a group who arrived in a three-wheeler handcuffed him and attempted to take him away. The victim alleged that when he tried to negotiate with the group, telling them that he had not done anything wrong but was beaten with the handcuffs as the cuffs did not clip.
The victim further alleged that his friends were also attacked after he ran away, following the beating.
Another resident recalls the incident stating that she saw everyone in a brawl as her son came in running to see if she was alright. She further alleged that her son too was beaten and taken away. She stated that they had told the police not to hit anyone and to “just take them away.”
Yet another resident in the area alleged that the police officers were drunk and said that they beat up two women and the men with poles. She noted that the woman was bleeding and that the police officer fell off his bike.
When News1st contacted Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara over the incident, he stated that the local residents had obstructed the duties of the police officers while arresting a suspect in the area, and had attempted to free the suspect.
ASP Ruwan Gunasekara further stated that three police officers, a lady sub-inspector and two police constables, were injured in the incident and added that the two police constables are currently receiving in-house treatment at the National Hospital. He further noted that one of the suspects who obstructed the duties has been arrested and will be produced before court on Wednesday.
