Investigations launched into Rathgama killing

A special investigation, headed by an Assistant Superintendent of Police, has been launched into the murder of the Rathgama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman, Manoj Pushpakumara Mendis.

The Office of the Police Media Spokesperson said that no arrests have been made as yet in connection to the murder.

The shooting had taken place in a hotel in the Hikkaduwa town at around 11.45 on the night of  Monday, March 23.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the shooting was carried out by four individuals.

Two others who were with the Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman at the time of the shooting were injured and are receiving treatment at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.

When inquiries were made from the Director of the Hospital, Dr. Shelton Perera, he said that the injured are being treated at the Intensive Care Unit.

Dr. Shelton Perera added that one of the injured was subjected to surgery. According to our correspondent, Manoj Pushpakumara Mendis, aged 37 and a father of one, was murdered while at a party at the hotel on Monday night.
