Former elections commissioner and defence secretary passes away

Former Elections Commissioner and Defence Secretary Chandrananda de Silva passed away on Saturday morning.

His funeral will be held on Monday at the Borella Cemetery.

Chandrananda de Silva who was appointed as the elections commissioner in 1982 pioneered several innovative approaches and reforms in the country’s electoral system. Sri Lanka’s first presidential election as well as the first public referendum took place under his leadership.

The preferential voting system, which was introduced in 1988, was headed by him while he was later appointed as the Defence Secretary and also served as the ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.

He was 78 years old at the time of his demise. The mortal remains of the late Chandrananda de Silva are currently lying at his Rajagiriya residence.
