A high court in Saudi Arabia has ordered the Saudi sponsor of a Sri Lankan housemaid to pay 68,000 Saudi Riyal in back wages.

The award was made after it was established that the Saudi sponsor had not paid the Sri Lankan maid for thirteen years.

Additionally, the high court located in Hail, approximately 400 kilometres from the capital Riyadh, also ordered the Saudi sponsor to pay the Sri Lankan maid’s airfare back home.

The Sri Lankan woman, who is from Beruwela is presently staying at the Women’s Welfare Camp in Hail under police protection.

The matter had come under the attention of the Sri Lankan Mission in Saudi Arabia when the Saudi sponsor had attempted to renew the housemaid’s passport.

Upon inquiries by the embassy, it had been revealed that the maid had been kept as a slave and had not been paid her salary from the time she had arrived in Saudu Arabia.
