Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardene says that it is not within the nature of the government to protect anyone connected to corruption or irregularities.
The Minister made this statement while participating at an event to commemorate war heroes in Colombo on Thursday. The event was held at D.S. Senanayake College in Colombo.
At the event, the Minister stated that as everyone is aware, there has been much talk in the recent past about large scale drugs and ethonol rackets. The Minister said:
Therefore as a government, we need to pay a lot of attention to matters of this nature. This is not the nature of this government or a minister to protect any person connected to corruption and irregularities. Also, we came into politics without the expectation of obtaining privileges or gaining popularity and no matter who makes charges or allegations, I am of the stand that wrongdoers must be punished.
