Anti-Corruption Unit raids Wellawaya sand mining operation

The Anti-Corruption Unit of Moneragala has successfully raided a sand mining operation that had been taking place for a period of time by a powerful politician from Wellawaya.

Speaking to News 1st the officers said that three vehicles used for the transportation of sand and two vehicles that removed sand were sezied and seven suspects were arrested.

The raid was carried out when sand mined from the Kirinda Oya was being transported based on a tip-off received by the Superintendent of Police for the Moneragala Division.

The arrested are residents from Matara, Rambukkana and Ethiliwewa. Police said that among the seized vehicles are two excavators and five lorries.

The arrested persons and seized vehicles were produced before the Wellawaya Magistrate on Friday by the Wellawaya Police.
