Questions were posed in Parliament on Wednesday, on whether the freedom of the media has been impacted by statements made by the Prime Minister.
Minister of Mass Media and Parliamentary Affairs Gayantha Karunathilake speaking in Parliament said that he accepts that there should be a free media in a democratic country and noted that he accepts that journalists play a major role.
Speaking on the topic of ‘white van culture’ the minister said:
There was a white van culture in the past. Journalists got haircuts and shaves for free, had their limbs broken and were threatened to the extent where they fled the country
The minister also said: ‘Can you tell me one person who has fled the country or even their village due to the alleged threats made by the Prime Minister?
