Nine days have lapsed since the temporary suspension of the Colombo Port City Project. Deputy Manager of the Project Chandana Gunawardena says that a loss of Rs. 500 million is incurred daily as a result of the temporary suspension.
Construction activities of the Port City Project were suspended temporarily citing the formulation of an investigation report. However, such a report is yet to be made available.
Secretary to the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment Nihal Rupesinghe says that there were anomalies in the previous reports.
When the project was suspended, 13 percent of the total land area for the project had been filled with sand.
The breakwater that was constructed to protect the reclaimed land was completed up to an extended of 870 metres below sea level and 420 metres above sea level.
However, officials at the construction site reiterate that lack of time to complete the breakwater has caused the reclaimed land to erode into the sea.
