Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the preparation of the bill with amendments to presidential powers is complete.

The Prime Minister made this statement at the event held to lay the foundation stone for the Bodhi wall at the Sedawatta Vehera Godella Purana Viharaya in Wellampitiya.

Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe stated that reforms to the 19th Amendment where the Executive Presidency will be abolished and Parliament would be accountable was prepared and presented to the party leaders. After the next parliament is elected, the President would operate on the advise of the Prime Minister. The President has also been vested with a new responsibility – that is the implement good governance in the country and to look in to the independent commissions and execute a proper election.

He added that President Maithripala Sirisena was elected through the people’s votes. He will be provided a special security and the execution of certain powers of the executive have also been protected. The establishment of a new state council to advise parliament and the administration has been proposed.

The Prime Minister went on to say that the initial steps have been taken to change the election system.
