It has been reported that kidney transplants at the National Kidney Transplant Centre have stalled since August last year.

This is said to have caused serious inconvenience to patients who are on the waiting list for kidney transplants. The list is said to have patients who are in a critical condition.

The patients say that authorities are yet to pay their attention to normalising kidney transplant activities at the centre.

When we made an inquiry from Director of the National Kidney Transplant Center Dr Suminda Ananda in this regard he said that the kidney transplant surgeries were stopped four months ago as the ICU required repairs.

However, he went onto say that even though the ministry was notified in this regard they have thus far failed to carry out the required repairs.

The Director of the National Kidney Transplant Center further said a kidney transplant which was scheduled to be carried using a separate room on February 24 failed due to the absence of the kidney donor.

However, he went onto say that they expect to resume kidney transplants in the coming weeks.
