Work on dismantling the breakwater at the Unawatuna beach was temporarily halted on Wednesday. This was following a tense situation that arose between two groups of residents.
News1st carried a special report on the environmental damage caused to the Unawatuna Beach as a result of this breakwater. After the revelation made by News1st, the Coast Conservation Department took steps to remove a part of the Breakwater, for which work began on Tuesday.
Pathways had been prepared to transport the machinery to the site of the breakwater. However, a tense situation arose between a group of persons who are against the breakwater being removed, and a group of persons who want it removed.
The Habaraduwa Police was deployed to control the crowd, Engineer for the Galle district, of the Coast Conservation Department, Chanaka Vinod too arrived at the location.
The group dispersed on the promise given to them that a decision regarding the Breakwater would be taken once discussions are held with higher officials at the Coast Conservation Department.
