A tense situation broke out during a protest that was carried out in the Padhiyathalawa road in Mahiyanganaya when the police intervened to disperse the crowd.
The protesters were demanding that a three kilometre stretch of the road from the 59th mile post to Morana, be repaired.
Residents engaged in the protest obstructing the junction at the 59th mile post in the Padhiyathalawa, Mahiyanganaya area.
The police intervened due to the disruption to the flow of traffic.Tensions flared when the police attempted to disperse the crowd. The police were seen pushing women who had gathered at the scene of the demonstration.
One person sustained a head injury.
When News1st contacted Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana, he stated that police had to use minimum force to disperse the crowds. He however said that if the police had used excessive force, action will be taken against the officers concerned.
