United Arab Emirates took on their pool B opponents Ireland at the Brisbane cricket ground on Wednesday.
Winning the toss Ireland invited UAE to bat first.
Amjad Ali and Andri Berenger gave UAE a solid start with an opening stand of 49 runs. however Ireland came back into the game with a couple of quick dismissals. UAE went onto record a score of 278 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted overs, thanks to the efforts of Shaiman Anwar who went onto score 106 runs in 83 balls.
Incidentally the UAE line-up contains two Sri Lankan born players one of whom is Andri Berenger who is an opening batsmen while the other is Manjula Guruge a left-arm Fast medium bowler.
Four Irish bowlers including Paul Stirling bagged two wickets each.
Ireland failed to get off to a good start losing opener Paul Stirling for three runs. William Porterfield and Ed Joyce stedied the Irish innings with a second wicket stand of 68 runs. However Amjad Javed gave the break they were looking for dismissing Joyce for 37. Ireland lost a couple of wickets in quick succession before a 6th wicket stand between Kevin O’Brien and Gary Wilson put Ireland with striking distance with their target. Ireland reached their target in the final over with two wickets in hand.
Amjad Javad was the pick of UAE bowlers where he picked three wickets for 60 runs.
Gary Wilson was adjudged the man of the match for his brilliant batting.
