Six police officers attached to the Sooriyawewa Police who were arrested over the death of a suspect in police custody have been remanded until March 4.
Meanwhile, a witness to the aforementioned incident was killed in a motor accident early Tuesday morning.
The six police officers who were arrested, were produced before the District Magistrate of Hambantota, Isuru Nethicumara, on Tuesday evening.
The magistrate ordered that the suspects be produced in an identification parade on March 4.
The death of suspect, 35 Year old Liyanarachchige Samantha, led to the arrest of six police officers.
The deceased was arrested on February 19 in Viharagala for allegedly possessing 11 bottles of illegal alcohol.
However, due to an illness he was admitted to the Sooriyawewa Hospital and was later transferred to the Hambantota Hospital.
On the evening of February 22, the suspect died.
Last night on Prime Time News, when News 1st aired this report, relatives and locals charged that Samantha was assaulted by the police.
This individual who claimed that the assailants could be recognised has provided a statement to the Police on Monday night.
Unfortunately, while returning home from the police with three others in a three-wheeler, he had met with an accident which claimed his life.
The three-wheeler had collided with a van early Tuesday morning.
Although there are suspicions over the death of the witness in an apparent accident, the Police Media Spokesperson says that there is no connection between the incidents.
The police constable,who was incidentally the driver of the van, was arrested and produced before the Hambantota District Magistrate.
Court ordered that he be remanded until March 6.
According to details ascertained over the ownership of the van, it has come to light that it belongs to a person from Kiriwewa in Sevanagala.
