President, PM, Opposition Leader stress on unity and peace in messages on Maha Shivaratri

President Maithripala Sirisena says that Hindus of Sri Lanka will gain more strength in their search for unity through reconciliation and understanding with the spirit of Maha Shivaratri Festival.

In the message, the President also said that the most visible aspect of this festival, the lighting of lamps, symbolises the constant efforts by humans to dispel the darkness of ignorance with the light of knowledge and understanding.

Issuing a special message in view of the Maha Shivaratri day Prime Minister Ranil Wickemresinghe said that Maha Shivaratri celebration is meant to drive away the darkness with the light of knowledge and also to build unity and togetherness in society.

In his message, the premier also said that today we are experiencing a new political culture which has created a feeling of brotherhood among all the nationalities who live in our country, in harmony.

In his Mahashiva Ratri day, message opposition leader Nimal Siripala de Silva says that The Maha Shivarathri Festival becomes more meaningful because Hindus have lived in unity, friendship with all people eschewing petty differences safeguarding human dignity and equality cultivating of spiritual values is an opportune moment to promote good values in society
