Oluvil Harbour – abandoned and forgotten (Watch report)

News1st has received reports that the Oluvil Harbour, which was constructed with the promise of connecting the Eastern Province with the world, has been abandoned and is not being made any use of.

The Oluvil Harbour was constructed in 2008 with aid from Denmark. Reports say that a sum of more than 46 million Euros was spent on this port.

Residents even had to sacrifice their homes, when lands were acquired for this project. The port was built over an area of 64 acres comprising of a 28 acre land area and a 15 acre sea area.

While operations commenced on September 1,  2013, the port has reportedly been abandoned at present.

The people of the Eastern Province are calling on the new government to rejuvenate the harbour, so that it can generate employment and strengthen them economically.
