An expectant mother who was seriously injured after falling off a bus, gave birth to her child in Kandy on Friday.

The expectant mother boarded a bus plying from Kandy to Hatton in order to attend a medical clinic in Nawalapitiya.

Although a sticker is displayed in every bus that a seat is reserved for a pregnant mother, no one in this bus took the time to give her a seat.

The result of this complacency was that the expectant mother was thrown off the bus, when it took a bend. She was rushed to hospital thereafter.

An immediate caesarean surgery was performed and the new born was admitted to the Premature Baby Unit.

The mother is also receiving treatment at the ICU of the same hospital. Police said that the driver and conductor of the bus were arrested and produced before court where they were released on surety bails of Rs.200,000 each.
