Speaking at a meeting in Thihariya , Nittambuwa on Tuesday, Leader of the JVP Anura Kumara Dissanayake provided an insight on the current government.
”If you take a look at Parliament, the UNP has 60 seats. I think now they have only 41. Initially there was 42, but after Tissa Attanayake switched sides that figure dropped to 41. So, when the polls drew closer the number could have risen to 60 with Rajitha Senaratne and Company joining with them. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party has 136 seats in Parliament. However, with 136 MPs, the SLFP is in the opposition; while Ranil Wickremesinghe is the Prime Minister with the support of 60 MPs. Astounding is it not? Maithripala Sirisena has become the President of the UNPers while Ranil Wickremesinghe has become the Prime Minister of the SLFPers. Will this last long? No. Will there be problems? Yes there will be. According to the current situation this cannot move ahead. We too are trying to steer the 100- Day programme forward. This is our attempt. Will this continue? It does not need to. This is a government that was formed in an unexpected manner. It is doubtful whether this will operate forever. There is a time for this. During this time we need to make our interruptions. One is that do we need to abolish the executive presidency? This Executive Presidency not only ruined the people it also ruined the individual who became president”
