A domestic flight belonging to Taiwan’s TransAsia Airways Crashed into the Taipei river Wednesday morning.
The French-made twin-engine turboprop ATR 72 flight with over 50 passengers on board crashed into the river after clipping a bridge shortly after takeoff.
BBC reports that the plane carrying mostly Chinese tourists has crashed into a river in Taiwan, killing at least 23 people.
Dramatic video footage emerged showing the TransAsia Airways plane clipping a bridge as it came down shortly after take-off from a Taipei airport.
The plane, carrying 58 people, has broken up and the fuselage is lying half-submerged in the Keelung River. Rescue efforts are ongoing.
Taiwan’s Central News Agence stated that the flight from Taipei to the outlying island of Kinmen lost contact with the flight controllers at 10:55 a.m. ad the fuselage landed in the Keeling River near the city’s downtown Sungshan airport.
The plane’s fuselage was seen half-submerged in the river with passengers and rescuers standing on the hull and swimming in the water.
Passengers who were rescued were helped into dinghies and taken to shore.
Footage of the plane crash filmed from a dashboard camera of a car shows the flight banking sharply and clipping the bridge before crashing into the river.
