Deputy Minister of Policy Planning and Economic Affairs Dr. Harsha de Silva says that a decision has been taken carry on the functions of the Central Bank devoid from the grasp of the state.
The Deputy Minister made this statement while attending an event in Colombo on Friday to launch the book titled Money, Inflation and Economic Development authored by Dr. H.N. Thenuwara.
Deputy Minister of Policy Planning and Economic Affairs, Dr. Harsha de Silva stated that:
It is the vision of our Prime Minister, that the daily functions of the customs and banks could be handled by institutions under the purview of the Finance Ministry and that it is essential that a separate ministry with a group of experts is required to make policies in order to determine how this country could be taken forward.
He went on to note that the requirement in the market must be identified. And in order to identify its requirements, a proper background must be created for it.
He added: We believe that the path the country is moving on, must be changed. Our mid-term requirement is to bring the Central Bank to a position where it is not answerable to any ministry of the state. We believe that the state should not interfere in the functions of the Central Bank.
