BASL President Att.-at-Law Upul Jayasuriya says that Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake who assumed duties as the Chief Justice today, would resign from her position tomorrow.

He made this statement addressing a media briefing in Colombo on Wednesday. The Attorney-at-law went on to state that a ceremonial farewell will be held for the Chief Justice at 10 am tomorrow.

Commenting on the judgements delivered by Mohan Peiris while serving as the Chief Justice, the President of the BASL noted that none of the verdicts will not be made null as he attended all hearings as part of a panel of judges.

Protests were staged against Chief Justice Mohan Peiris, earlier Wednesday, calling on him to resign from his position.

Later it was revealed that the government had taken a decision to reinstate Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake as the Chief Justice after revealing that the proper procedures had not been followed during her impeachment process.

Shirani Bandaranayake arrived at the Supreme Court premises on Wednesday afternoon when the protests subsided.

Shirani Bandaranayake served as the 43rd Chief Justice of Sri Lanka from May 2011 –  till she was impeached by the previous administration in January 2013.  Allegations of financial irregularities were among the charges levelled against her before she was impeached.  Her controversial impeachment drew much criticism and concern.
