Today marks Australia Day, the Official National Day of Australia.
It marks the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales in 1788 .
In the present day Australia, the celebrations are reflective of the diverse society and landscape of the nation, enhanced by community and family events,reflections on Australian history, official community awards and citizenship ceremonies welcoming new immigrants into the Australian community.
The holiday is marked by the presentation of the Australian of the Year Awards on Australia Day Eve, the announcement of the Australia Day Honours list and the addresses from the Governor-General and Prime Minister.
Australia Day has become the biggest annual civic event in Australia.
Meanwhile, parallel to Australia Day, Australia Unlimited, an initiative by the Australian Government, which operates under the Australian Trade Commission, promotes and felicitates outstanding Australians and those with Australian educational background who possess outstanding and innovative ideas and excellence targeting the global audience. It has published a list of 19 Future Chasers as “Australia’s most inspiring young leaders” who are playing key roles around the world. They hail from several different fields including design, media and activism.
The list of 19 young leaders includes 15 Australian Citizens, and 4 others with Australian Educational Background. Among the four non-citizens on the future chasers list, is Balendran Kandeban, the former Director Sales of News 1st, currently the Channel Head of Shakthi FM. “The Media Man” from among the future chasers, Kandeban, is also the Host, of Mahalatchadhipathi, the Sri Lankan tamil version of the hit reality TV show, Who Wants to be a Millionaire.
He is also a guest lecturer at Victoria University and a member of Victoria University’s Course Advisory Board.
He was also the recipient of the 2014 Australian Alumni Excellence Merit Award for Business Administration, awarded by Australian Trade Commission, the “Young Achiever Award” from Victoria University Australia and the only Sri Lankan media personality on the grand jury of New York Festivals.
