General Secretary of the National Patriotic Movement Dr. Wasantha Bandara was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department on Monday.
Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said that Dr. Bandara was arrested on charges of organising a protest opposite the UNP Headquarters, Sirikotha, and for being a member of an unlawful gathering.
Meanwhile, a number of individuals including politicians who were believed to be involved in several incidents reported during the recently concluded poll, were produced before court on Monday.
Former Deputy Minister Dulip Wijeyesekera and Chairman of the Biyagama Pradeshiya Sabha Ananda Ganepala were arrested and produced before court on charges of attacking an individual during polling for presidential elections.
Kadawatha Chief Magistrate Mahinda Prabhath Ranasinghe ordered that the suspects be released on sureties of Rs.100,000 each.
The next hearing is scheduled to convene on March 25.
