New-Zealand claimed victory in the first ODI against Sri Lanka on Sunday. Sri Lankan Skipper Angelo Mathews decided to bat first after winning the toss at Christchurch.

Sri Lanka were 82 for the loss of four wickets as Mahela Jayawardena and Lahiru Thirimanne maintained a 73-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Mahela Jayawardena, who brought life to the Sri Lankan innings scored his 18th ODI Century with a knock of 104 runs while six other batsmen failed to score double figures.

At the end of the 50 overs, Sri Lanka Managed to score 218 runs for the loss of nine wickets as Kiwi pace bowler Mitchell Mcclenaghan took four wickets for 36 runs.

Kiwi Batsman Martin Gupitll was dismissed for a duck as New-Zealend began their reply for Sri Lanka’s 218.

Brenden McCullum scored his 27th ODI half Century while building up a 63-run partnership for the second wicket.

Corey Anderson and Nathen McCullum built a 60-run partnership for the 7th wicket during which Anderson scored his second ODI half century with 81 runs.

T.M. Dilshan and Nuwan Kulasekara took two wickets each. New Zealand won the match at the end of 43 overs, having lost seven wickets.
