The Election Commissioner granted permission to state media Organisation, Rupavahini to telecast the media briefing that was convened to release the final results presidential elections which concluded on Friday.

Even though News1st requested for permission on many occasions throughout the day on Friday, permission was denied by the Elections Commissioner.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Democratic Party, Sarath Fonseka expressed the following views with regard to this issue.

I have come to know about how journalists including News1st journalists were denied permission to enter the Elections Secretariat. We sincerely express our dismay as part of the party that clinched victory at the concluded elections. From the time I ran for office in 2010 to the time I was sent to prison , Sirasa was the only media organisation that was there throughout, acting as our advocate. Sirasa was our representative and worked dedicatedly with us. Sirasa is the only media organisation that provided us with unbiased, fair telecasts during our presidential election campaign, continuously . Therefore, if Sirasa was not meted out justice then I will sincerely express my dismay. I know that Maithripala Sirisena will not accept this either. If they were treated unfairly, I will also express my concern on behalf of him. We will continue to work together with Sirasa. We will at all times take necessary steps to place Sirasa at its right position.
