Police state that shots were fired at a group of supporters of the presidential candidate of the New Democratic Front, Maithripala Sirisena, while they were engaged in decorating a stage for a rally in Kahawatta.
Police media spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said that three people have been injured in the shooting. He also said that following the incident, a group of persons had engaged in a protest, obstructing the road.
The Police Headquarters state that 14 Provincial councillors and local government representatives have been arrested over incidents of election-related violence.
Meanwhile, CaFFE says that 1,096 election-related incidents have been reported ahead of the presidential polls. Executive Director of CaFFE Keerthi Tennakoon stated that 116 complaints have been received relating to election violence. He added that 256 incidents of election laws being flouted, and illegal election propaganda activities have been received.
Furthermore, Executive Director of PAFFREL Rohana Hettiarachchi states that 797 complaints have been lodged with the monitoring body with relation to election law violations and election-related violence.
