Arrests made in Dummalasuriya over alleged treasure hunting

Six individuals who were allegedly excavating for treasure in the Udubaddawa area in Dummalasuriya have been arrested by the police.

The office of the Police Media Spokesperson said that the arrests were made at around 7.30 on Sunday night.

The police said that the suspects were excavating a privately-owned land in the Udubaddawa area in Dummalasuriya with the intention of discovering ancient artifacts. The suspects have are residents of the Udubaddawa, Nikaweratiya and Welipenna-gahamulla areas.

Police added that a three-wheeler, a cab and a motorcycle in which the suspects arrived to the location have also been taken into police custody. The suspects and the recovered items are due to be produced before the Kuliyapitiya Magistrate on Monday.
