Issuing a statement the Ministry of External Affairs says that domestic elections are not for foreign government representatives to be prescriptive about.
The statement adds that it is surprising that the EU Heads of Mission in Colombo resorted to a press statement on an issue of a ‘strictly domestic nature.’ It added that such an initiative could bring into question the bona-fides and objectivity of their intervention.
The statement goes on to read that the elections commissioner, who is an independent authority, has been mandated by the statutory powers vested in him, with the task of conducting free and fair elections.
On Friday, the European Union Heads of Mission in Colombo stressed the importance of Sri Lanka’s Presidential election, and has called for the process to be peaceful, credible and transparent.
