President Mahinda Rajapaksa and presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena welcomed the new year, giving priority to religious observances.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa attended religious observances at the Kiri Veheraya in Kataragama and also took part in religious observances at the Kataragama Maha Devalaya.
According to the Presidential Media Unit, the President also attended an annual Pirith chanting ceremony held in Kataragama in remembrance of SLFP founder, S.W.R.D. Bandaranayaike and his wife former Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike.
Meanwhile, Presidential Candidate of the New Democratic Front Maithripala Sirisena began the new year with religious observances at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya. Maithripala Sirisena also attended religious observances at several other places of worship as well.
