Presidential candidate of the Democratic National Front, Maithripala Sirisena says that investigations will be launched into incidents of journalists being harassed, and the perpetrators will be brought to book.

Maithripala Sirisena made this pledge while addressing a group of journalists on Tuesday.

The Convener of the Free Media Movement, Sunil Jayasekara put forward a number of proposals to the Presidential Candidate Maithripala Sirisena at this event.

The proposals contained several suggestions on subjects including media freedom, abolishing the censorship in media and social responsibility.

During the occasion, Maithripala Sirisena shared these views:

[quote]

Throughout my political career never have I had problems with a media institution or with journalists. I have always opposed impediments put out against journalists, be it under the present government or under any other government for that matter. I would like to clearly state that once I come into power I will be a national leader who will respect and protect the rights of free media.
