The Ministry of Higher Education says that attending the Mahapola Scholarship Awards Ceremony that will be held on Tuesday, is mandatory.

Secretary to the Ministry Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navaratne says that scholarship money for three months will be handed over to students at this function and those who do not attend this event will not be given the scholarship money.

Speaking on the issue, the Secretary said:
The Mahapola Scholarship will be awarded to students who were selected for the years 2012- 2013 today, under the auspices of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. At the same time, a certain student union has been informing students via phone and sms to not to attend this award ceremony. We inform students not to be misled by this and come and obtain their scholarship money. The students will be given scholarship money for three months and if they do not come they will not be able to obtain the money. The scholarship money has been increased from 2500 to 4000 rupees and this is the first time that this increased amount is given to students.
