Doctors serving in the Galle district went on strike on Friday as a mark of protest against the Mayor of Galle obstructing the services of a public health officer.

Medical health officers employed at all hospitals except those serving at Karapitiya and Mahamodara Teaching Hospitals and three base hospitals refrained from duties on Friday.

Secretary of the Government Medical Officers Association attached to the Galle district, Kamala Kodikara cited the attack launched on the employee of the Galle Municipal Council as the reason behind the strike action.

Meanwhile, residents charge that transportation along the road between Uhubiya and Ginigaspitiya in Kurunegala is proving to be difficult owing to the dilapidated state of the road.

The locals staged a demonstration seeking the immediate renovation of this road.

Parliamentarian Nimal Jayasinghe who arrived at the location promised to renovate the road. The residents however were not pleased.

Subsequently , the MP attempted to contact Project Minister Nirmala Kothalawala via telephone in a bid to provide a solution, however, the residents had reacted.
