A press conference was held by the Joint Opposition this afternoon, featuring Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena.
MP Rajitha Senaratne, MP Karu Jayasuriya and Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thero were also in attendance while M.K.D.S. Gunawardana joined later. Speaking at the press conference, Minister Sirisena promised that after his victory he would not allow anyone, not even President Rajapaksa, to be tried for war crimes.
Turning his attention to elections, he called on the Elections Commissioner and the IGP to ensure that all propaganda posters and cut-outs are removed once the official campaigning period begins on December 8.
Sirisena noted that his campaign would not use cut-outs or polythene.
Minister Rajitha Senaratne also spoke at the press conference. The minister claimed that police had been told to protect cut-outs of the President. Minister Senaratne, charged that there were massive amounts of state funds being used for the elections, noting that at no point in history has there been this level of state sector involvement in elections.
UNP Deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya , went one step further, claiming that no other President in the world has as much power as President Rajapaksa. Moreover, Chairman of the JHU, Venerable Athuraliye Rathana Thero charged that, as the President has been blinded by greed for power and that the Sri Lankan economy relies solely on international loans.
He also called this a chance for members of all parties to unite under one banner. The JHU’s final decision, he said, on whether or not it would support the common candidate would be revealed on Monday or Tuesday.
It was also announced at the press briefing that the common opposition will stage their first political rally on November 30 in Polonnaruwa and there was much teasing that there were more crossovers expected next week.
