The Ceylon Electricity Board says that water levels in hydro power plants has risen to 83%.
Media Spokesperson and Deputy General Manager of the CEB Senajith Dassanayake said that, as a result, they are able to generate 55% of the national electricity requirement using hydro power.
Around 40% of the electricity requirement is generated via coal power plants while only 5% is generated with expensive crude oil. Senajith Dassanayake added that with the increase of electricity generation via hydro power , they have temporarily suspended operations at the third coal power plant in Norochcholai.
The Media Spokesperson further noted that, accordingly, the plant will be used for an essential research activity during this period.
