President Mahinda Rajapaksa has instructed the Fisheries Corporation to purchase all fishing produce of the fishermen along the Negombo coast that are unable to secure a sale, at a contemporary, effective price.

According to the Presidential Media Unit, the President gave these instructions during a discussion with the fishermen associations in Negombo, Chilaw, Kalutara and Beruwala.

A clash took place in Negombo recently between the fresh fish fishermen and dry fish fishermen, when, with the increase of fishing harvest in the Southern Province, fresh fishermen started producing dry fish in Negombo

Presidential Media Unit said that the President issued these instructions after taking the issue into consideration.

At the meeting, the President pointed out that both fresh fish and dry fish industries are important to Sri Lanka and thus all fishermen must work with cooporation.

At the discussion, the fishermen informed the President of the problems they face due to the low quality of their fishing nets.

Accordingly, the President informed officials of the Ministry to form a standard for fishing nets with the involvement of NARA .
