The social club in Wewelduwa, Kelaniya, which Minister Mervyn Silva ordered to be closed down recently, remained open on Wednesday.

The continuing operation of the social club prompted protests from area residents.
Following a demonstration against the operation of this social club on November 16, Minister Mervyn Silva had ordered that it be closed down.

Nevertheless, since the social club remained open on Wednesday, residents arrived at the location in procession and staged a demonstration.

A bhikkhu expressed views:
We got to know that the establishment had re-opened a short while after the Minister closed it down and left. Through his action the Minister displayed his respect and stature. Now we ask whether it is someone more powerful than him that worked towards re-opening this establishment.
Meanwhile, a resident expressed views:
We thought that the Minister had come here and resolved the matter, because he came here directly and closed it down and left. But when we were returning home from the temple we saw that it was open.
Our cameras captured the manner in which the controversial establishment was closed down during the protest.
