Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Leader of the House Nimal Siripala de Silva announced that the Supreme Court has unanimously determined that there is no impediment for President Mahinda Rajapaksa to contest for a third term in office.

Leader of the House, Nimal Siripala de Silva revealed the following details at the Parliament;

It is with great happiness that I announce Honourable Chairman, that our Excellency the President can once again contest for the presidential election and triumph, after the Supreme Court has unanimously determined that there is no legal impediment for President Mahinda Rajapaksa to contest for a third term in office. The Supreme Court has also very clearly determined that the president has the right to call for an election in order to contest for a third term.”

He added:

The Supreme Court has also unanimously come to a decision that there is no impediment for the incumbent president, in terms of Article 31 of the Constitution, after the expiration of four years from the date of commencement of his second term in office, to declare by proclamation, his intention of appealing to the people for a mandate to hold office as President by election for a further term. I would like to end my statement here by announcing that if there is suspicion over this matter, it should be noted that the President who won this country over terrorism can call for an election whenever he wishes to at any given time.”
