Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka notes that although the poverty line of Sri Lanka lies at 6.7 percent, it does not remain sustainable.
Inline with the World Science Day , the science week commenced on Tuesday under the auspices of Minister of Technology, Research and Atomic Energy Patali Champika Ranawaka.
Minister of Technology, Research and Atomic Energy , Patali Champika Ranawaka expressed the following views: “The Department of Census and Statistics has identified that a minimum of 3500 rupees can be spent by an individual per month. However, drilling does into these figures it is understood that many people live in poverty in the county .”
He added; “For an example if the government doesn’t aid the poor people in our community this percentage will rise upto 9.6 percent. It is evident that if the country is devastated by natural calamities such as drought or torrential rains the poverty level of rises. Therefore, the use of Technology and IT knowledge and through the upliftment of small and medium enterprises, the country can reduce the level of poverty.”
