The Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning valid for the next 24 hours.
The warning states that due to the atmospheric disturbance located to the northeast of Sri Lanka, showers or thundershowers will be widespread with heavy rainfalls of more than 150mm in the Northern, North Central, Eastern and Uva Provinces.
Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organisation has issued a warning that if rains persist for a further 24 hours, the risk of landslides and cut slope failures would increase.
According to the NBRO, the districts that are at risk of landslides are the Kegalle, Ratnapura, Matale, Kandy, Badulla, Nuwara Eliya and Kalutara.
