Speaking at a media briefing convened on Sunday, Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana, commented on the arrest of the son of a minister, in connection with an alleged assault that took place at a nightclub in Bambalapitiya.

The Police Media Spokesperson revealed the  following details:

“The incident occurred at a nightclub on Duplication Road in Colombo 4. The incident occurred between 1 and 3:30 a.m. and a complaint was first lodged at the Bambalapitiya Police. The complaint was that the individual known as Malaka Silva had been assaulted by a foreign national. The Bambalapitiya Police initiated investigations based on this complaint. Subsequently, the Colombo Crimes Division took over the investigation. Investigations were carried out under the supervision of an ASP and the OIC of the Crimes Division. Facts regarding the incident came to light during the course of the investigation. There is dancing that takes place at this nightclub for various groups. “

He added: “The assault was the result of an incident which occurred there. The foreign national had struck a blow to Malaka Silva, but when looking at the reasons for the incident it was ascertained that it was the foreign national and his girlfriend who were the victims in this case. It was the foreign national’s birthday on the night of the 31st. He is a forty-three-year-old from Scotland who works as an Engineer at a Construction Company established in Kottawa. Since it was his birthday, he had invited his girlfriend, who is from England, to visit the country. “

Speaking further the Police Media Spokesperson said:

“He too had suffered injuries to the head and face during this altercation. Malaka Silva was arrested in connection with the assault. Colombo Number 6 magistrate Chandima Liyanage had gone to the hospital where he was being treated and examined him at about 9 o clock last night. Following the examination he was remanded until the 4th of November on which date he will be produced in an identification parade. The CCTV footage of the incident is being studied. Statements are being recorded from the manager and staff at this nightclub. It has been reported that another five or six persons had come with Malaka Silva to this location. It has been reported that they too were involved in the assault. Malaka Silva who was being treated at a private hospital under police custody, was taken to prison today following the magistrate’s order.”
