At a media briefing convened on Friday, Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said that the number of missing in the landslide in Miriyabedda, Koslanda, is thirty four.
Police Media Spokesperson, SSP Ajith Rohana expressed these views:
[quote]The landslide occurred in the Ampitikanda area in Meeriyabedda. This area comes under the purview of the Kotabathma Grama Niladhari Division. As of noon today, after analysing all of the data, we have ascertained that the total number of dead is three, that is to say we have recovered three bodies. More could be discovered during the course of the day. The total number of missing is 34. Ten men and nineteen women are missing. One girl and four boys are also missing.[/quote]
It was also revealed at this media briefing that a police investigation is underway into the landslide in Meeriyabedda.
[quote]His Excellency the President has issued instructions to conduct an immediate investigation and ascertain if there was negligence on the part of any faction and for a report to be submitted to the President. Inspector General of Police N.K. Ilangakoon has informed the Senior DIG in charge of the Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces, Lalith Jayasinghe, to appoint a special police team under his supervision. We are hoping to conclude the investigation within a maximum of five days or a week and to submit a report to His Excellency the President.[/quote]
