Both the Government and the opposition have been accusing each other of vying for the support of the Tamil diaspora for the next presidential election.
Addressing an event in Rathnapura Minister Wimal Weerawansa stated that a global Tamil organization is gathering in Malaysia to decide which candidate the Tamil community in Sri Lanka support. The minister adds that Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremresinghe has been invited to attend the gathering and claimed to possess the email which invited the leader of the UNP to attend the gathering.
Asst Leader of the UNP Ravi Karunanayake reacting to this statement noted that Ranil Wickremesinghe has not been invited for this event. Quoting a newspaper article the parliamentarian pointed out that it was Min. Vasudeva Nanayakkara who met with representatives of the Tamil diaspora inorder to get their support for the government.
